Bone marrow / stem cell transplant
In the human organism, the cells responsible for blood production are stem cells in the bone marrow. A transplant of cells with these extremely special functions is generally called a “bone marrow transplant” or “stem cell transplant”. In past years, stem cells have been collected from bone marrow directly and under operating room conditions using special needles. But today, this method is very rarely used. In recent years, with a special drug, stem cells are allowed to pass from the bone marrow to the blood, and the cells are collected by a method called “apheresis”. This method does not require any surgical intervention.
